ABOUT THE ROLE

St. Joseph’s Hospital is seeking a dynamic, flexible, and experienced Float Occupational Therapist (OT) to join our multidisciplinary team. In this role, you will provide vital coverage across all rehabilitation inpatient units, assisting in the absence of other OTs. This position requires a highly autonomous individual with the ability to prioritize and adapt to various practice areas within a rehabilitation hospital setting.

As a Float OT, you will be responsible for assessing, treating, and coordinating discharge plans for patients across a diverse range of clinical units, including medical, neurological, orthopedic, palliative, and geriatric units. You will work collaboratively with a dedicated team of healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality care to our clients.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Perform comprehensive assessments of patients’ physical, cognitive, and functional abilities across multiple inpatient units.
  • Design and implement individualized treatment plans that support rehabilitation goals, focusing on promoting independence and improving quality of life.
  • Conduct discharge planning and provide recommendations for continued care post-discharge, including adaptive equipment and home modifications.
  • Collaborate with physicians, nurses, physiotherapists, speech therapists, and other healthcare professionals to ensure coordinated care.
  • Work across diverse practice areas, including medical, neurological, orthopedic, palliative, and geriatric units, adapting your approach to meet the specific needs of each patient population.
  • Provide patient education and support, ensuring patients and their families understand the therapeutic process and goals.
  • Maintain accurate documentation of patient progress, treatment plans, and outcomes in accordance with hospital policies and regulatory requirements.
  • Adjust to changing priorities and demonstrate flexibility in covering different units and patient needs as required.

WHAT YOU BRING

Education/Experience:

  • Degree or equivalent from an accredited occupational therapy program
  • Current registration with the College of Occupational Therapists of Ontario (COTO) and thorough knowledge of its Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice
  • Maintains/updates liability insurance on a yearly basis (as required by COTO)

  • Ability to manage a clinical practice in a health care setting
  • Strong clinical judgment and decision-making skills
  • Able to adapt to different client needs and provide care in a variety of hospital settings
  • Ability to complete analysis, using clinical knowledge, skill and judgement to synthesize assessment information
  • Ability to assess and treat psychosocial issues
  • Ability to communicate effectively and concisely, both orally and in writing
  • Ability to work independently, interdependently, and participate as a contributing member of a variety of teams within the workplace, community, and ministries/agencies
  • Strong project/time management, analytical/critical thinking, problem-solving, and decision-making skills
  • Ability to use independent judgment and maintain confidentiality of records, actions, and information
  • Demonstrated regular attendance at work

 

Assets:

  • Specialized experience or certifications (i.e. A.D.P. authorization) may be required or desirable for some positions
  • Membership in Canadian Association of Occupational Therapists (CAOT) and/or Ontario Society of Occupational Therapists (OSOT) is strongly encouraged

 

Conditions of Employment:

  • This position shall be conditional upon a satisfactory Police Vulnerable Sector Check (PVSC) where indicated, to ensure the absence of relevant criminal convictions.
  • May be required to travel to various work locations and provide own transportation.
